Who? Lucy and Ala!

What? The Greenpeace Great Wall of China Challenge

The primary goal? To raise 5,500 AUD each (11,000 AUD), half of which is due by August 25, 2006, for Greenpeace's climate change campaign activity.

The secondary goal? To trek the Great Wall of China, the only man-made structure visible from outer space (supposedly), with Greenpeace China! Read on!

All about Ala!

Hi, I’m Ala! That’s me in the picture on the left next to the blindingly white Lucy. ;-)

I'll begin with a little something about myself, and how I got into the Greenpeace Great Wall of China Challenge. I'm Ala Paredes, 23 years old, and a graduate in AB Communications (which is a fancy term for "media"). I love art, music, books, writing, and travel, and my hobbies include painting, singing, poi (fire spinning, but without the fire hehe), capoeira (I try at least), blogging like mad, and scuba diving. I am currently based in Sydney, Australia! Anyway...

Why Greenpeace? I’ve done a little something for Greenpeace in the past, mainly sailing on their flagship, The Rainbow Warrior, as a writer/blogger for a small part of their Asia Clean Energy Revolution. The trip was a total eye-opener for me, and since then I've supported the organization, and have always wanted to do something for them.

Why Climate Change? Because it's the biggest and most immediate problem our planet faces today. It will affect every single one of us. One major cause of climate change is the emission of greenhouse gases from fossil fuels such as coal (did you know that Australia is the world's biggest exporter of coal?). You can learn more about climate change, it's effects, and what you can do to help here and here.

Why the Charity Challenge? What initially drove me to do this was gut feel- yes it's true! The flyer for this contest landed in my hands one evening. I put the flyer aside, but it was an idea that nagged at me for weeks and weeks. I knew that I had to at least face this challenge, succesful or not, and that I would regret walking away. After much deliberation, all of life's signs pointed to YES in a very direct way (I can tell you all about this story another time).

What attracted me is the challenge of thinking up ways to raise funds, while knowing that I am contributing and spreading the word about a cause I believe in. It's bound to be an enriching experience. Why raise 5,500 AUD each? Then again, why not? Explore possibility! I cannot wait to dialogue with my community, and the other people I will meet along the way, people who may or may not believe in my cause. So many things to learn! I love that I am able to share this journey with all of you I am excited about getting many people involved.

It's a chance for me to combine two things I love: the environment, and travel (educational travel at that!). I also feel that now is the best time in my life to give recklessly and devote myself to a good cause. I'm young, single, and done with school! And while it's good to donate money out of your pocket to support a good cause, I want to offer myself: my hands, my talents, and my ideas.

Whether or not we do make it to China, I think this fundraiser will be a great experience. The trip to China will be the cherry on top, but the sundae is still just as good without it.

So here we go! We'd like to call on you to please help us build a great wall against climate change because we cannot do this alone! We will be posting different ways you can help us, as well as documenting every step of the journey here at buildthiswall.livejournal.com. We hope that you do join us on this journey!

Much love,

Ala
